A Bass Fishing Secret - Hawaii!

Bass fishing and Hawaii are seldom found in the same sentence let alone in conversations centered around one of the most popular of game fish!  Yet in an unintentionally secretive sort of way, great bass fishing is happening in these islands well under the radar... something our freshwater anglers are very content with! While island fishing publicity centers around saltwater fishing, Hawaii's freshwater fishing enthusiasts are seeking out the likes of Large-Mouth bass, Red Devils, Small-mouth bass, Bluegills, Channel Cats, Snakeheads, Oscars, and the hard-fighting strikingly beautiful Peacock Bass!

The absence of large lakes, rivers, and streams makes most visitors not even inquire about likes of freshwater bait- and fly-casting but the opportunities are here, generally in a few key spots like reservoirs and a couple of lakes our Texas friends would call "puddles." But these "puddles" are literal angling gold mines as each is regulated unlike the larger ocean fishing grounds surrounding the islands. And the limited expanse of our freshwater venues make it a bit easier to search out hot spots as opposed to trying your luck on a well-fished coastal stretch.

Many of us islanders grew up fishing for freshwater fare like tilapia which are plentiful in the brackish transitional waters where streams meet the ocean. Then, during the open season, a trip to the local reservoirs in search of tucanare, catfish, and the coveted large mouth bass would be a welcome change from the hot and humid beaches where fishing is allowed year round. But then, the array of fishing opportunities offered by the ocean pulled most of us to the sea leaving a relative few to continue into the finer aspects of freshwater fishing in Hawaii!

Over the years, the diminutive yet steady community of freshwater fishing enthusiasts has resulted in more freshwater fishing venues being stocked offering the likes of bass, trout, and other fishing game to rival a number of places in the world that are "noted" for their bass opportunities! Bass fishing in Hawaii has even gotten to the level where there are guides you can hire to shortcut your path to the "big one!"

So, the secret is out. Hawaii's got great bass fishing! The next time your spouse or significant other asks you to take a vacation from your fishing so the two of you can go sightseeing in Hawaii, simply say "yes..." then quietly pack your fishing gear!
